Relationships are at the heart of our lives, they provide us with happiness, fulfilment, and a sense of belonging. At their strongest, they provide us with a source of advice, guidance, love and support that contributes to our health and wellbeing.
Because relationships are so important, problems within them, or the absence or breakdown of them can impact us significantly. We can feel let down by those we have relationships with, or by ourselves if we find the time and energy to work at relationships hard to come by, or feel that we lack the social skills needed to develop and maintain meaningful relationships.
Whilst not a definitive list, the range of issues that relationship counselling may be suitable for include: communication, behavioural problems, jealousy, commitment, affairs, trust, betrayal and anger.
Relationship counselling is not just for couples. Whatever the relationship, whether it is with a partner, family member, work colleague or friend, and whatever the issue is, relationship counselling can help couples or individuals explore their needs, what they want from their relationships, and how to get them back on track.
I work with clients to resolve relationship issues, exploring exactly why things have gone wrong, the feelings and attitudes of each party, and how problems can be overcome. Therapy and counselling does not require all parties to participate, indeed it is recognised that in some cases there may be active resistance or hostility to therapy from one party, and this in itself may be a factor in the problems.
As an integrative psychotherapist, I recognise that there is no ‘one size fits all’ form of therapy, and I offer a range of therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Relaxation and Behaviour Therapy. At an initial meeting, I talk to clients about their needs, give them a chance to get a feel of how I work and decide on the individual therapy of combination of therapies they feel will be right for them. There is no set minimum or maximum number of sessions, and there is ongoing review to ensure sessions are productive and help clients to move forward in their relationships.
My fees are based on an ethical position of not wishing money to be a barrier to therapy so there is a fee scale guideline depending on your income and you place yourself at the level of your income.
